What is the UK Student Visa?
The UK Student visa (formerly Tier 4) allows you to study at a licensed UK institution. Before applying, you must have an unconditional offer from a UK university and receive your CAS number.
Step 1: Receive Your CAS Number
Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is issued by your university after you accept an unconditional offer. You cannot apply for a visa without it.
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
You will need: - Valid passport (must be valid for the duration of your studies) - CAS number from your university - English language proficiency proof (IELTS 6.0+ or equivalent) - Proof of funds (enough for tuition + living costs for first year) - Academic qualifications and transcripts - Tuberculosis test results (required for some countries) - Parental consent if under 18
Step 3: Complete the Online Application
Apply at the UK Visas and Immigration website. You will pay the visa fee (currently £490 for applications outside the UK) plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (£776 per year of study).
Step 4: Book Your Biometrics Appointment
After submitting your application online, book an appointment at a visa application centre to provide your fingerprints and photograph.
Step 5: Wait for a Decision
Standard processing takes around 3 weeks. Priority processing (5 working days) and super priority (next working day) are available for an additional fee.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- •Applying too early (you can apply up to 6 months before your course starts)
- •Insufficient funds in your bank account (must be held for 28 consecutive days)
- •Documents not translated into English by a certified translator
- •Inconsistencies between your application and supporting documents
- •Missing the CAS expiry date
